What Is LASIK?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a form of refractive eye surgery that aims to correct common vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. During the procedure, a specialized laser is used to reshape the cornea—the clear front surface of the eye—in order to improve how light is focused onto the retina. This can help reduce or potentially eliminate the need for glasses and contact lenses.

What Are the Benefits of LASIK?

LASIK offers several benefits for individuals with nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. This procedure can significantly reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses, often providing immediate vision improvement. Most patients experience minimal discomfort and rapid recovery, with clearer vision typically achieved within a day or two. LASIK procedures are designed to be precise and customized to each eye for optimal results.

Who Is a Candidate for LASIK?

You may be a good candidate for LASIK if you meet the following criteria:

  • Age 18 or older with stable vision for at least one year
  • Have a prescription within the treatable range for nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism
  • Healthy corneas with sufficient thickness for reshaping
  • No active eye conditions such as infections, severe dry eye, or glaucoma
  • Not pregnant or nursing, as hormone changes can affect vision
  • Overall good health, with no autoimmune or uncontrolled conditions that may impair healing
  • Realistic expectations about the results and potential risks of surgery

A comprehensive eye exam is necessary to determine if LASIK is the right choice for your specific needs and eye health.

What Are the Differences Between LASIK and PRK?

LASIK and PRK are both laser eye surgeries that correct vision by reshaping the cornea, but they differ in technique and recovery. In LASIK, a thin flap is created in the cornea, which is lifted so the underlying tissue can be reshaped. The flap is then repositioned, allowing for quicker recovery and minimal discomfort. PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy), on the other hand, removes the outer layer of the cornea entirely before reshaping the tissue. This layer regenerates over several days.

Since PRK does not involve a corneal flap, it may be a better option for patients with thin corneas or certain eye conditions. However, PRK generally involves a longer healing period, more initial discomfort, and a slower return to clear vision compared to LASIK. Both procedures offer excellent long-term results, and a consultation with Dr. Garay can determine the best option based on your individual eye health and lifestyle.

What Does LASIK Surgery Involve?

LASIK surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis, and the entire procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes to complete. You should arrange to have someone else drive you home after your appointment.

During the procedure, your surgeon will use specialized laser technology to create a thin corneal flap. Once the flap is lifted, the underlying corneal tissue is precisely reshaped. The laser removes a microscopic amount of tissue, sculpting the cornea to adjust its curvature and correct the refractive error with the aim of improving your vision. After the cornea is reshaped, the flap is repositioned. LASIK surgery is generally a quick and painless process, and our eye care specialists do everything in their power to ensure patients are comfortable throughout their treatment.

How Long Does It Take to Recover from LASIK?

Recovery after LASIK surgery is typically an efficient and relatively comfortable process, and patients should notice near-immediate vision improvements. While every individual heals at a different rate, many patients feel comfortable enough to resume light work the day after their procedure. It is important to give your eyes adequate time to rest after surgery, so we recommend avoiding activities like reading, watching television, and browsing on the computer for around 24 hours. Driving can typically be resumed within a few days of treatment, based on a patient’s individual comfort and healing response.

Patients can generally return to their normal exercise routines a few days after surgery, though they should be careful to protect their eyes and avoid activities with a high likelihood of exposing them to dust, dirt, and other debris. Water activities should be avoided for several weeks.

You can expect to have your first postoperative appointment within 24-48 hours after your procedure, at which point one of our eye care specialists will assess your healing progress and provide personalized guidance for optimizing your recovery. It is important that you follow all of your surgeon’s aftercare instructions and use any medications, eye drops, and protective eyewear as directed.

How Long Does LASIK Last?

In the majority of cases, the results of LASIK surgery last many years into the future. The reshaping of the cornea is designed to permanently correct whatever vision impairments a patient is experiencing at the time of surgery, reducing or possibly eliminating the need for corrective eyewear. That said, the anatomy of the eyes can continue to change over time, which means that some patients may require retreatment—sometimes called a LASIK enhancement.

Is LASIK Safe?

LASIK is considered a safe and effective procedure for vision correction when performed by an experienced eye surgeon like Dr. Garay. It has a high success rate, with most patients achieving 20/40 vision or better1. Serious complications are rare, and advancements in technology have further improved safety and precision. Like any surgical procedure, LASIK does carry some risks, including dry eyes, glare, halos, or under/overcorrection. In most cases, residual side effects are typically temporary and manageable. A thorough pre-operative evaluation helps ensure you are a suitable candidate, and our doctor takes a variety of precautions to reduce the risk of complications.

How Much Does LASIK Cost?

The precise cost of LASIK varies between patients based on a variety of different factors, including:

Since LASIK is generally considered an elective procedure, many insurance plans will not provide coverage. However, we still advise patients to review their vision insurance benefits, since some insurance companies do provide discount plans or other perks. A member of our team will be happy to help you review your coverage and benefit options during your visit.

How Do I Find a Qualified LASIK Surgeon?

Selecting a qualified, experienced LASIK surgeon like Dr. Garay is key to achieving safe treatment and successful results. To find a qualified LASIK surgeon, start by looking for a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in refractive surgery. Board certification ensures the doctor has met high standards of training and expertise. Experience matters, so choose a surgeon who has performed a large number of LASIK procedures and stays current with the latest technology. Ask for referrals from your eye doctor, friends, or family members who have had successful LASIK. Research online reviews and testimonials to gauge patient satisfaction. Additionally, during your consultation, ensure the surgeon performs a thorough eye exam and clearly explains your options, risks, and expected outcomes. A reputable surgeon will be transparent, answer your questions, and only recommend LASIK if you are a good candidate. You should feel comfortable and confident in their care.
